Neue Haas Grotesk Font Fanily represents a contemporary geometric sans-serif typeface which Christian Schwartz designed. Max Miedinger designed the first weights of Neue Haas Grotesk at Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei in Switzerland from 1957-1958 under art direction from Eduard Hoffmann who was the principal of the company. The creation of Neue Haas Grotesk aimed to establish a response against British and German grotesques which gained popularity because of Swiss functionalist typography. After this revision Linotype AG released the type as Helvetica.
Because Linotype needed to adapt Neue Haas Grotesk for use on their hot metal linecasters they created the substantially modified Linotype Helvetica version. Regular and Bold required equal widths between their matrices so the designers redrawn Bold sections at a smaller proportion. Phototypesetting era led to another round of modifications on Helvetica before its release.
