Helvetica Neue LT Pro was first known as Neue Haas Grotesk. It was created in 1957 by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann, who led the Haas Type Foundry in Basel, Switzerland. Their goal was to design a neutral, clear typeface with no inherent meaning, making it suitable for many types of signage. This approach led to one of the most popular typefaces of the mid-20th century.
After Linotype licensed it in 1960, the font was renamed Helvetica. The new name, adapted from “Helvetia,” the Latin word for Switzerland, was chosen to highlight Switzerland’s reputation for modern graphic design.
