Copperplate New Font Family is an upfront serif display typeface that Caron twice meticulously designed. Tiny serifs together with broad letterforms and especially bold titles made calling cards appear good at 6-point size while enormous bronze-cast logos appeared in newspaper headlines and restaurant menus. The Copperplate experienced its peak during the period that ended in 1960s when die neue Typografie and monospaced grotesques emerged. The typeface completed its disappearance in that period. Digital variations of Copperplate typefaces returned when personal computers became available although only a single version achieved popularity as an Adobe program standard font.
The widespread use of Copperplate in DIY practice and amateur design work during this time period created damage to its status. Copperplate New exists as a restoration effort to revive the original element of the design. Specifically the new typeface extends both the weight range and width ranges of the existing style system. Smaller point sizes of this typeface exhibit sans-like properties because its serifs have undergone additional reduction which enhances legibility. Large point sizes allow the form to show its complete original character while small point sizes reveal a more sans-like appearance.
The addition of decorative inline and shadow styles exists in five variations for easy formatting adaptation of the typesetting needs. The changes implemented in Copperplate New maintain the original design by Goudy ensuring it stays faithful to his American cultural vision from that period.
