The Garamond font is a classic serif typeface, first designed by Claude Garamond for the Parisian printer Robert Estienne in the sixteenth century. It is one of the most popular fonts in the world. This font is adapted from a font called D’Aetna. It was created after the invention of movable type printing. The font is more readable than other fonts because of its square shape and thicker lines. The modern Garamond is a close relative of the original, informal appearance. Since the rise of popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many modern revivals have developed in the Garamond style; Jean Jannon and Robert Granjon were among them.
Initially, it was based on Francesco Griffo’s designs, which he had cut for Aldus Manutius in 1495. Later, in 1561, Garamond passed away. The original dies. It was then sold to Christoph Plantin’s Antwerp printing office. You can still find the originals in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. Based on Garamond’s design, many versions of this font have been created. Like: Adobe Garamond, Garamond Premier, Stempel Garamond, URW++ Garamond No. 8, Granjon, Sabon, Berthold Garamond, and EB Garamond.
But there is another version that is based on Jannon’s design called ATF Garamond/Garamond No. 3. Influenced by Garmond’s design, some more fonts were created, but they followed different design paths. They are, among them, ITC Garamond by Tony Stan, Cormorant by Christian Thalmann, Claude Sans by Alan Meeks, etc.
