Impact was designed by Geoffrey Lee in 1965 for Stephenson Blake foundry and released shortly thereafter. With its thick strokes, compressed letterspacing, and minimal interior counter form specifically intended to “impact,” its thick strokes, compressed letterspacing, and minimal interior counter form are designed for maximum impactful effect – hence its name!
At high height x-heights reach nearly three quarters of capital line while ascenders are small while descenders shorter as intended by Geoffrey Lee himself; its intended use for text applications is limited compared to Haettenschweiler Compacta which also used by Letraset when creating text headlines but with less impactful results; Linotype Face Helvetica Inserat by Geoffrey Lee.
