GQ was first published in 1931. At its inception, it focused heavily on style. In addition to clothing and accessories food books movies and fitness were also explored by GQ which gradually evolved into the mass media publication we know today. It wasn’t until 1967 that GQ turned into Gentlemen’s Quarterly but by 1970 its publication frequency rose to once a month (by Conde Nast) with Art Cooper as Editor. Next under Art Cooper’s editorship GQ began to include articles on non-fashion subjects.
GQ remains today largely a general men’s magazine competing against Esquire. GQ International was released as an adaption to its US editorial formula. Jim Nelson became editor in February 2003. During this time he also write editor A number of National Magazine Award nominated magazines aimed at younger or casual readers.
