Starting in 1928 and finishing in 1930, the successful font Gill Sans® was designed by English artist and type designer Eric Gill. The roots of Gill Sans can be traced to the typeface that Gill’s teacher, Edward Johnston, designed for the signage of the London Underground Railway in 1918. More classical in proportion than Johnston or any other sans though, it still looks like a typeface by an artist-craftsman.
With a characteristic flare on the capital R and loop at lower right on his “r” family of letters, what could be called his signature style. Gill Sans is a humanist sans serif with some geometric touches in its structures.
It also has a distinctly British feel. Light, easy to read and friendly, the lighter weights make it a great text face, while the bolder weights are lively enough for headlines or posters. The content is modern, sometimes amusingly idiosyncratic.
