There are three reason for using a condensed type: the main one, as the name implies, consists of packing more copy in a width of column than in a regular type. Ovular-shaped characters are, for example, generally less in width than circular ones and will allow for more letters per line. In a column one-quarter as wide as that of the regular type column such as a 12-pica measure in this text this typeface can provide fully 25% more copy than the regular type in the same space.
The second reason is that when larger type sizes that call for the special series are used sparingly. Finally, the special series are useful for headings or headlines.
