Phudu is a sans serif display typeface created by Duong Tran and derived from Vietnam hand-lettering billboards of the old. This font family covers an extensive set of languages and is a new approach to variable fonts; Phudu font becomes larger for the lighter screenshots which means that it is more legible than other narrow typefaces. Duong aimed to produce an up-to-date and clear Vietnamese typeface which contained the essence of traditional Vietnamese lettering styles that could be seen on billboards stores during the olden times.
He combined some of those researched letters from the traditional styles and modified them to suit current design trends but with their “Vietnamese” feel. The typeface is called Phudu, meaning “revival” in Vietnamese, and that is what it is.
