Community Gothic Font

The Frerejones company designed the Community Gothic Font through its modification of neo-grotesque gothic typefaces. These typefaces maintained clarity along with durability however they also carried coarseness and awkwardness. Each font emerged independently from its design phase as creators made no effort to connect them with one another. Through Community Gothic the authors restore the rough elements of this specific genre alongside the type founder and printer combines which built their sets. The designers developed each typeface independently yet managed them to progress as conventional weight and width series for straightforward use.

Tobias Frere-Jones, Fred Shallcrass and Nina Stössinger used historical American and European foundry sources to create each style for the design. To achieve irregularity in their designs the creators utilized tools designed solely for this family they introduced asymmetric curves together with buckled lines. Community Gothic actively opposes digital type standards which produces an emphatically human design quality with its rough appearance.
